On the 25th of June I hand-delivered a ‘Going for Gold’ petition to Downing Street, created by St Walburga’s Catholic Primary School in Bournemouth.
363 children from St Walburga’s Reception classes through to Year 6 participated in the petition comprised of individual medallions. The petition calls upon world leaders to fulfil their promise for all children across the globe to be given the opportunity of an education and I found the particular reasons the children gave compelling and thought-provoking.
The Prime Minister agreed with the sentiments expressed by the children in his response and informed the school of what the Government has achieved:
“By 2015, children everywhere will be able to receive a full primary education. By 2013, Britain will lead the world by becoming the first of the global twenty richest countries to spend 0.7% of our income on aid. We are committed to spending aid wisely to ensure it benefits as many children as possible and that progress is made to give poor people better access to education”.
Thank you to the children and staff of St Walburga’s for creating such an important petition.
