Mr Ellwood, MP for Bournemouth East, had his home targeted by pro-Palestinian protesters last Monday 19th February. Following this incident and the heartfelt support he received from his constituents Mr Ellwood commented:
"Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who has shared kind words regarding the situation that occurred at my home on Monday evening. Receiving so many supportive messages has been greatly appreciated.
As I commented publicly, Monday’s event demonstrates an erosion of what is deemed acceptable in pursuing the right to demonstrate. The scale of this event was quite a shock to the village and I am grateful to the large police presence – who were equally concerned about where such high tensions might lead.
I know that in my position as a Member of Parliament I have to expect criticism, it comes with the position, and I am accustomed to having my positions challenged by both politicians and the public. But if such behaviour, impacting on family were to become the norm, it would certainly deter good people from stepping forward into public life.
Ironically, I have long taken an interest in the Middle East - I was Foreign Minister for the region for a number of years. After absolutely condemning the Hamas attacks on the 7th of October and Israel’s right to defend itself, I was the first MP days later – BEFORE the invasion – to warn PM Netanyahu not to charge in without a plan. His continued attacks on Gaza as a whole is compounding the situation not resolving it. I’ve said repeatedly - the scale of collateral damage is unacceptable. So it’s puzzling why I was targeted.
This was a clear attempt to intimidate but in doing so, it has actually given me greater resolve to speak out and not be bullied.
I would like to thank my constituents again for all their kind words of encouragement – they are very much appreciated and help me plod on!"
