Plans for turning
Shelley Manor into a major community centre and theatre have received
a welcome boost with the news that the Adeline Road GP's practice
has confirmed their intention to move to the Shelley building.
Having campaigned with the 'Friends of Shelley Manor' to secure
funds for renovation Tobias was pleased that the Council's planning
board has now approved revised restoration plans for the historic
building.
The Bournemouth Teaching Primary Care Trust has agreed, in principle,
to providing financial support up to the sum of £100,000 per
annum (uplifted for inflation) to enable the Practice to relocate.
The practice has now written to the PCT stating their wish to move
to premises in the restored Shelley Manor.
Plans include a proposal for a theatre, café, conference
rooms and a museum dedicated to the life of Shelley. It is hoped
the financial viability of these plans will be secured by proposals
to use parts of the Shelley complex as a doctor's surgery and flats.
Tobias said:
"I am delighted
to hear the PCT will not object to the Adeline Road Practice moving
into Shelley Manor, this is the news the Practice have been waiting
for. The building is arguably the most historically significant
in Bournemouth and, after years of campaigning, Shelley Manor's
future is finally coming to fruition.
With an approved
planning application and the PCT on board, the two crucial parts
of the jigsaw are complete, allowing plans for community facilities
in Shelley Manor to go ahead. After a long wait, real progress has
been made and the work on this much loved building is soon to be
a reality."
