Shadow Minister:
Culture Media and Sport

In July 2007 Tobias was promoted from the Opposition Whips' Office to Shadow Minister for Culture, Media and Sport (CMS).

Tobias has specific responsibility for:

1.Tourism:
Tourism is the UK's sixth biggest industry and in some seaside resorts, such as Bournemouth, arguably the biggest. Yet tourists in Britain pay more in tax compared to anywhere else in Europe.

2. Licensing
The 2003 Licensing Act came into force on 24 November 2005 and has had a serious impact on Britain's public premises which are allowed to sell alcohol. With drink related anti-social behaviour on the increase, Tobias has called for a review of the impact of the Act, now that it has been in place for around two years.

3. Gambling
With 70% of the nation either having a flutter on the Grand National, visiting a casino or playing the lottery, gambling is a popular pastime. Ensuring the right level of regulation is the responsibility of Government (via the Gambling Commission) and the advent of internet gambling has introduced new challenges for the Government to ensure the vulnerable and the young are adequately protected.

The other MPs on the Shadow Team are Jeremy Hunt (Shadow Secretary of State), Hugh Robertson (looking after the Olympics brief) and Ed Vaizey (with responsibility for media and museums).
